WHAT ET CALLS HOME

There’s something romantic about lavender because not only is it a beautiful color, but the smell alone can transport you to the fields of Provence. With the ability to awaken two of our key senses – sight and smell – it is no wonder why lavender has become the unicorn for interior design. As such, we want to share some of our favorite lavender design and décor for your home!

In pretty much every home that I design, the one accessory that I never leave out is an orchid.

Any time of year, an orchid can make a room instantaneously happy. And it is a sophisticated accessory that anyone can purchase at their local grocery store. Now keeping an orchid alive, that’s entirely up to you and your green thumb! I will admit, I go through my fair share of orchids at my own home simply because I either forget to water with three ice cubes once a week (so simple but I still fail!) or I leave in a cold window.

While these beautiful flowers can be quite temperamental,  they really do add beauty to any room.  And what can be even more beautiful is how they are displayed.

Here are ideas for your own orchid containers:

I have always loved Moroccan inspired concrete/cement tiles, but, in the past, it has taken a special client who was bold enough to use them! While they aren’t for everyone, their bold colors and patterns definitely set the stage for a room.

I have only ever used these tiles in a bathroom before, but I would love to one day use in a sitting room or breakfast room. The only downside to using in a bathroom is that they cannot be placed inside a shower, so you must find an alternate tile for a shower floor.

Here is a picture of a bathroom that I recently completed for a spec home in Chicago.

I know, I know! A spec home?!? What if the potential buyer doesn’t like it! Well, I was fortunate that the pattern was subtle enough and the black/white theme is very in right now.

Here are some other examples of Moroccan tiles used in homes…

I am so happy that they are becoming more mainstream now, and I am seeing them pop up all over Instagram and Pinterest!

And why not start a blog!?! We are constantly asked what inspires us, what our favorite things are, what’s new and exiting in the world of design, so we thought it was time to share with our friends. Check in weekly to see what we think is all the rage!

First up…We recently visited NYC’s Holiday House, an annual show house that always features the best in design. After eight successful years at The Academy Mansion on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Holiday House opened its doors in Soho this year at the two newly constructed “Sullivan Mansions.”

As this year’s honorary chair was none other than Iris Apfel, you immediately felt her bold and quirky presence in each room. We’ve detailed below a few of our favorite rooms and our “wish list” items within each room. We highly recommend that you visit next year if you can!

Oscar Wilde Study

We love how you step back in time as you enter this turn of the century inspired study. The antique gadgets found at every corner spur a natural curiosity to examine each object, quickly turning this room into an interactive museum. Whereas the flower arrangements scattered throughout act as romantic muses – and because every great writer needs a muse!

One of our favorite piece in this room was the “Jansen” desk from Newel Gallery.

Here are some similar desks that we’ve found in our finds that we also love…

Julien Desk / Maison Desk / Eliot Writing Table

Gatsby Safari Bedroom

What a bedroom! We love the insurgence of “safari chic” that we are seeing throughout the design world. We can’t get enough of this bedroom!

Isn’t the wallpaper amazing! It’s Stark’s Zebra Flock…

We hope you enjoy!
